MedShr local networks connect doctors through clinical case discussion

MedShr local networks connect doctors through clinical case discussion

24 July 2017

  • Recent study shows doctors are using open social media channels to share patient images and discuss clinical cases
  • MedShr designed to allow GMC-compliant private case discussion between doctors
  • MedShr Local Networks connect primary & secondary care doctors through clinical case discussion to increase  quality of care and improve patient pathways

MedShr – the private, professional network for clinical case discussion – has today announced the launch of MedShr Local Networks, which will offer private groups to connect local GPs and hospital doctors in NHS trusts. Dr Asif Qasim, Founder and CEO, hopes that this will lead to better clinical decision-making: “With better communication and collaboration between GPs and hospital doctors, we can improve the quality of care and use case discussion as a vehicle to improve care pathways.”

A recent report by DeepMind Health, covered by the Guardian, revealed that many NHS clinicians are sending patient images through unsafe channels such as Snapchat, which is “insecure, risky, and non-auditable.” MedShr was developed specifically to provide medical professionals with a safe platform for clinical case discussion. The app and web platform allow members to share cases with over 250,000 verified medical professionals from all over the world, or privately with a group or individual.

MedShr Local Networks have been developed to encourage collaboration between primary and secondary care in specific areas, and facilitate peer-to-peer learning while protecting patient information. Clinical case discussion supports clinicians in referrals, decision-making and follow-up, and ultimately saves the NHS time and money. Local Networks will focus initially on specialties that are targets for improvements in quality, pathway efficiency, and market share.

MedShr Local Networks has been piloted with Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, who are digital leaders in pioneering the approach. CHS benefits from an asynchronous closed learning environment in which allocated faculty leads are responsible for leading case discussion. Groups include an overarching Croydon Case Discussion Group, as well as groups for Haematology, Cardiology and Urgent and Emergency Care. These groups contain only approved members who can view and contribute to case discussions. Cases with photos or movies require patient consent and are fully anonymised, which makes MedShr a fully GMC-compliant network.

In addition to the Local Networks framework, MedShr’s private clinical case discussion groups are currently being rolled out to replace traditional multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs) for a number of private London hospitals. Providing a platform for virtual MDMs facilitates high quality patient case discussion and clinical decision making without the often difficult requirement of a face-to-face meeting. In an increasingly time-pressured healthcare environment, MedShr’s new system strives to make achieving best practice patient care easier than ever before.

Dr Asif Qasim says “MedShr Local Networks facilitates private and safe case discussion and collaboration between primary and secondary care professionals in a new and exciting way. We know this is a great way to bring clinicians closer together and improve the quality of care.”

UK startup collaboration: DrFocused to provide secure messaging for MedShr’s 250,000+ members

UK Startup Collaboration: DrFocused to provide secure messaging for MedShr’s 250,000+ members

12 July 2017

  • Two UK medtech startups announce exciting new venture to improve communication between medical professionals
  • DrFocused’s will be providing encrypted private messaging for MedShr’s 250,000+ members

Two UK startups that provide digital technology for medical professionals, MedShr and DrFocused, have today announced that they will be working together to provide secure messaging to over 250,000 medical professionals, in addition to existing case discussion and networking on the MedShr platform.

Privacy and security of data are key concerns when it comes to the use of technology in healthcare, as the recent cyber attack on the NHS made all too clear. Both firms are fully committed to protecting patient data while enabling better communication between medical professionals. DrFocused’s new service will provide encrypted messaging that is compliant with all information governance guidelines, in addition to MedShr’s GMC and HIPAA-compliant clinical case discussion.

MedShr and DrFocused hope that the new venture will improve communication and collaboration between healthcare professionals. Over 250,000 members worldwide currently use MedShr’s private platform to share and discuss clinical cases, and secure member-to-member messaging provided by DrFocused expands the opportunities for education and training.

CEO of DrFocused Kit Latham states, “We are thrilled to be working with MedShr, a company that shares our vision of putting better technology in the hands of doctors to improve healthcare.”

Dr Asif Qasim, Founder and CEO of MedShr, says, “We are delighted to be working with the team at DrFocused! MedShr is committed to sharing knowledge and skills to improve patient care, and collaboration is an integral part of this.”

Patient data at risk: UK medtech startup calls on doctors to share cases securely

Patient data at risk: UK medtech startup calls on doctors to share cases securely

23 May 2017

  • Doctors currently relying on unsafe channels to send sensitive clinical information about patients
  • The MedShr app was designed specifically to offer doctors a secure, encrypted channel for case discussion

In the wake of the recent NHS cyber attacks, MedShr today calls on all medical professionals to think twice before sending patient images or information via Facebook, SMS or Whatsapp. Founder & CEO of MedShr, Dr Asif Qasim, expressed concern that many medical professionals are using unsafe channels to discuss clinical cases, in breach of official GMC guidelines. This puts patient images and private clinical information at risk of hackers and misuse.

Clinical case discussion is an essential aspect of most medical professionals’ daily practice and continuing medical education, with discussions today often taking place via smartphone. A recent study by Imperial College found that many doctors and nurses had sent patient-related clinical information over their smartphones; 64.7% of doctors had used SMS, 33.1% had used app-based messaging, and 46% had used their smartphone camera & picture messaging. But this practice puts both medics and patients at risk: clinical images aren’t stored securely, usually staying on the medic’s phone camera library, may not be properly anonymised to protect patient privacy, and there’s no record of consent. A lost phone or hacked iCloud account could risk those sensitive images being widely distributed.

These issues of patient privacy and information governance are key principles of MedShr – a system developed specifically to allow clinical case discussion in a secure, GMC-compliant, professional network. All clinical images on MedShr are anonymous and require patient consent, which can be obtained easily in-app. Clinical  photos can be taken directly through MedShr to leave no copy on the medic’s smartphone. All clinical images, case information & patient consent forms are encrypted in secure cloud storage. In addition, all members must be verified as doctors or medical professionals before they can access the platform.

“We aim to provide a safe and secure digital environment for clinical case discussion while protecting patient privacy and operating within GMC guidelines,” says Dr Qasim. MedShr helps doctors, medical students & healthcare professionals make the most of smartphone technology and peer-to-peer learning opportunities in a secure, easy, compliant way.
